7 things to know before changing careers into tech

There are so many of you have pivoted your careers - either into tech from another sector, or within the world of tech switching roles.

So here’s our 7 top tips from WITB members who have done it before.

1. Believe in your potential

Imposter syndrome can plague anyone venturing into a new field. And the fear of not belonging or not being skilled enough can be hugely detrimental to your progress.

Remember… every expert was once a beginner! Embrace a growth mindset and acknowledge that learning is a continuous process.

Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.

And remind yourself that you're on a path of growth.

2. Find out your strengths and passions

Before diving headfirst into a tech career, take time for self-assessment. Reflect on your passions, strengths, and interests.

Research various tech roles and fields to understand where your skills align and speak to other people in roles like this.

Ask them the basic questions like what their day to day looks like, what resources they read for self development, what do they like or dislike about their jobs.

This exploration will help you make an informed decision and avoid embarking on a career path that doesn't resonate with you.

It may also open up your eyes to a whole new world of possibilities!

3. Identify any skills gaps

Identifying the skills you need for your desired tech role is crucial.

Conduct a thorough analysis of your current skill set and compare it with the requirements of your target position. Recognise where you have gaps and create a learning plan.

Online platforms, coding bootcamps, and community college courses offer great options for skill development.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: Any courses you do (and we mean any!) - get them on your CV and Linkedin!

4. Get connecting!

Networking is the gateway to new opportunities. Attend tech meetups, conferences, and online forums to connect with professionals in the field.

Engaging in conversations and learning from their experiences can provide insights and valuable advice for your transition.

Building a network not only keeps you updated on industry trends but also opens doors to potential mentors and job opportunities.

5. Get a mentor

A mentor can be a guiding light in your tech journey.

Look for someone who has successfully transitioned into tech or is an experienced professional in the field.

Their guidance can help you navigate challenges, set realistic goals, and offer insights into the industry.

A mentor can provide valuable feedback, share their experiences, and provide a fresh perspective on your career trajectory.

6.  Embrace a growth mindset

Tech is a rapidly evolving field, which means continuous learning is essential. Stay updated with the latest technologies, programming languages, and industry trends. Dedicate time to self-study and practice coding regularly.

Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and Codecademy offer a plethora of courses to enhance your knowledge. Embracing a growth mindset allows you to adapt to changes and stay competitive in the tech landscape.

7. Get in there with some hands-on experience

Theory is crucial, but hands-on experience sets you apart.

Start building your projects to apply what you've learned.

Create a portfolio showcasing your work, which can serve as evidence of your skills to potential employers.

Collaborate on open-source projects or contribute to tech communities.

Not only will this bolster your practical skills, but it will also demonstrate your commitment to the tech world.

Remember, a career change into tech is not just about learning new tools and languages; it's about embracing a mindset of growth, adaptability, and perseverance. Be curious, resilient, and proactive in learning. So, take the leap and embark on a fulfilling journey into the exciting world of technology.
